Living in Newburgh, Indiana

Newburgh, Indiana is located in the southwestern Indiana near the Illinois border. It is on the outskirts of Evansville, Indiana. and on the banks of the Ohio River. It is the oldest town in Warrick County.

Newburgh was founded in 1803 by a man named John Sprinkle. The name of the town was originally Sprinklesburg, but was changed to Newburgh in 1837. Because of its proximity to the Ohio River, Newburgh became a large riverport between Cincinnati and New Orleans.

The town of Newburgh has grown steadily since 1950 thanks to help from the city of Evansville and their booming industry. Due to its rich history and architecture, the town has built up a lively historic district. Living near this activity gives one a chance to indulge in antiques, painting and specialty shops. The art crowd seems to be expanding every year and the appreciation for the arts has definitely become noticeable amongst the townpeople.

The town is still small though. In 2000, there were 3,088 people listed on the US Census. This is great because it keeps the small town feel even though it is near a large city in Evansville.

Another thing that is really fun to do in Newburgh is dining out. Newburgh has some excellent restaurants including some great seafood eateries that feature fresh fish from the river as well as oceanfish fromt he Atlantic Ocean.

If you need a quiet place to relax, you can visit Veterans Park which was dedicated on 11/11/06 by the town council and members of the American Legion Kapperman Post #44. Plans for a veterans monument are in the works and they are selling bricks to help support the project.

You can also spend many hours looking at the beautiful buildings that grace the town and you can learn about their great history. It's nice to take a Saturday and peruse through the shops while walking around old buildings next to the river. It almost feels like you've stepped back in time.

What many people don't realize is that the area where Newburgh grew up was once the home to several thousand Mississippian Indians. They lived in the area from 1100 to 1450 AD and then disappeared. It is a mystery as to what happened to Indians.

Like golf? Newburgh is home to a world-class golf course, Victoria National. The course, which is an Audubon Certified Sanctuary, was recently ranked #22 in Golf Digest's Top 100 Courses. The course was built over an old coal mine and used the unique geography to its advantage. It also was the first major course to install a Sub-Air in-ground vault system which provides all 18 greens and practice greens with temperature and moisture control and CO2 evacuation.

The hiking in the area is really good as the town is surrounded by low hills and flat rolling land. The Ohio River feeds the grounds around the town making everything lush and green in the Spring and Summer and the trees are gorgeous during the Fall.

The weather is temperate. Newburgh tends to get a fair amount of rain at an average of 42" a year and snow at an average of 13" a year. The winters can be could, but the area makes up for it in the Spring.

If you are interested in moving to Newburgh and you want a luxury home, you can find several in the neighborhood of Victoria Manor. The golf homes are adjacent to the aforementioned Victoria National and are definitely on the high-end of Indiana real estate.

There are also condos and townhomes available as well as some lower-end homes for those that can't necessarily afford the luxury homes at Victoria Manor.

If you need to go to a mall or some of the larger stores, it is but a quick drive to Evansville to the West. It's nice to have Evansville so close, but not have to mess with the traffic build-up that happens in bigger cities.

Newburgh is a great place to visit and live and also a great place to raise a family. The town is full of friendly people and is very clean. I didn't meet a single person who had a bad word to say about the area!
